On holding your own in a fast-paced world Winner of the Silver Cricket (National Award) for most impressive stage performance 2024-2025!

This performance takes place in a fast-paced, automated world where things lead a life of their own. And suddenly, there stands an elephant at the bus stop. He looks a bit confused. But who is really strange? The elephant, or the fast-paced world around him?

Theatrical performance with minimal dialogue, video, and lots of music. The inventive set, music, and lighting and sound act as antagonists for the elephant, who is brought to life by Barend van Daal wearing a beautiful mask (Eva Arends).

Mask acting theatre workshop In the workshop, you will discover how to create theatre using a mask, your movement style, and a healthy dose of imagination. Afterwards, you will receive materials to take home and work on making your own mask. You can attend the workshop at the theatres in Tilburg, Utrecht, and Nijmegen.

One-off performance with audio guide The performance will also be staged on October 29 during the De Betovering festival in The Hague at Theater aan het Spui, for the blind and visually impaired. With live audio description and a special introduction by a blind interpreter from Komt het Zien!

Education accompanying the performance Het Filiaal theatermakers is developing education for *Er staat een olifant bij debussen* consisting of online teaching materials and two different FiliaalLabs.

This performance is a subtle indictment of the surveillance society, which constantly seeks to keep everyone in line. Aided by Eva Arends’ magnificent elephant mask, Barend van Daal movingly portrays the slow despair of the animal.

‘Director Monique Corvers once again presents a visual youth production at the Utrecht youth theatre company that is, at times, delightfully humorous in an understated, disarming way.’ – Theaterkrant

"I love mask and puppetry. As an actor, you try to bring something to life, and sometimes a puppet or mask really seems to take on a life of its own. That is fascinating. Puppets and masks can get away with much more than ordinary people, and that feels good."
gastmaker Barend van Daal
‘This serene little gem unfolds into a loving ode to everyone who falls just outside the norm but nevertheless remains themselves.’ - Theaterkrant
